The legend of Brabo is a founding myth of the city of Antwerp, Belgium. According to the tale, the city was once terrorized by a giant named Druon Antigoon. This tyrannical figure demanded a toll from anyone who wished to cross the Scheldt River. Those who refused to pay had their hands cut off. The giant's reign of terror brought fear and hardship to the region, making it impossible for people to live and trade freely.
In stepped a courageous Roman soldier named Silvius Brabo. He confronted the menacing giant and engaged him in a fierce duel. Brabo, using his strength and wits, managed to defeat Antigoon. The climax of their battle came when Brabo cut off the giant's hand and threw it into the Scheldt River. This act, "hand werpen" in Dutch, is said to be the origin of the name "Antwerpen" (Antwerp).
